Participation
We enroll patients who will be delivering at Highland Park Hospital, Swedish Hospital and University of Chicago Medicine.
What does it mean to be in the FEEDS study?
If you participate in this study, you will be randomly assigned to a group. Like the flip of a coin, you could be in
1) the usual care group where you will receive regular prenatal care and be offered an online chest/breastfeeding class, and help feeding your baby in the hospital from nurses.
2) the usual care + Peer Counseling group, where you will also have regular prenatal care, the online class, and help from nurses in the hospital. You will also have appointments with a Peer Counselor during your pregnancy and after you deliver.
No matter what group you are in, if you sign up for this study, you will complete 3 surveys during and after your pregnancy. The surveys will ask about your infant feeding knowledge and attitude, the help you receive, and how you feed your baby.
You can participate in the FEEDS Study if you:
• Speak English or Spanish
• Have not already participated in the FEEDS Study
• Are expecting to deliver at Highland Park Hospital or Swedish Hospital or University of Chicago Medicine
• Are between 12 and 23 weeks in your pregnancy
Where will the study visits take place?
You will complete the 3 surveys over the phone. If you are placed in the Peer Counseling group, you will have the option of in-person or telehealth visits with the Peer Counselor at your delivery hospital.
